North Korea launched several ballistic missiles toward the Sea of Japan, escalating tensions on the Korean Peninsula as the United States and South Korea conducted large-scale joint military exercises in the region.

According to South Korea’s military, the missiles were fired from North Korea’s western region and traveled several hundred kilometers before landing in waters east of the Korean Peninsula. Authorities said the launches were closely monitored by South Korean and U.S. defense systems, which tracked the missiles from their launch points to their impact areas.

The missile launches came as the United States and South Korea were carrying out their annual joint military drills, which include air, land, and naval training operations designed to strengthen defensive readiness against potential threats from North Korea. Pyongyang has long condemned these exercises, describing them as rehearsals for an invasion and frequently responding with missile tests or other military demonstrations.

South Korea’s Joint Chiefs of Staff said the country’s armed forces remain on heightened alert and are maintaining close coordination with U.S. military forces stationed in the region. Officials added that intelligence agencies are continuing to analyze the launches to determine the exact type and capabilities of the missiles used.

Japan’s government also confirmed that the missiles landed outside its exclusive economic zone and reported no immediate damage or injuries. Tokyo strongly protested the launches, calling them a threat to regional peace and security.

North Korea has carried out numerous missile tests in recent years as part of its efforts to advance its weapons program, including the development of longer-range ballistic missiles capable of reaching distant targets. The country maintains that its weapons development is necessary for self-defense against what it describes as hostile policies by the United States and its allies.

Analysts say the timing of the launch is likely intended to signal Pyongyang’s opposition to the ongoing military exercises and to demonstrate its continued military capabilities. The tests are also expected to draw condemnation from the international community and may lead to further diplomatic tensions in the region.
