Indian High Commissioner to Bangladesh Dinesh Trivedi has met Indian Army Chief General Dhiraj Seth to discuss bilateral relations between Bangladesh and India and ways to strengthen defence cooperation.

The meeting was disclosed in a post published on the verified Facebook page of the Indian Army late Tuesday, October 6. No further details were provided about the specific issues discussed.

The meeting comes amid renewed attention to Trivedi’s recent comments in Dhaka regarding former Bangladeshi Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s departure for India on August 5, 2024.

Speaking at an event in Dhaka on Saturday, October 3, Trivedi said Sheikh Hasina was not taken to India by the Indian Air Force or Army. He said she went to India amid the circumstances prevailing in Bangladesh at the time and suggested that, as a neighbouring country, India had little choice but to accept the situation.

His remarks have drawn particular attention as discussions continue over Sheikh Hasina’s possible extradition and a potential visit to India by Bangladeshi Prime Minister Tarique Rahman.

Some diplomatic analysts believe Trivedi’s comments were intended to underline India’s position that Hasina’s departure was primarily the result of Bangladesh’s internal political situation and that India should not be held solely responsible for it.

Others believe New Delhi is seeking to clarify the extent of its role by emphasizing that Sheikh Hasina was not transported to India by the Indian military.

Analysts have also compared Trivedi’s remarks with comments made by then-Indian Foreign Minister S. Jaishankar in India’s Rajya Sabha on August 6, 2024, a day after Hasina arrived in India. They argue that the two statements broadly convey a similar position regarding the circumstances surrounding her departure.

The latest meeting between Trivedi and the Indian Army chief comes at a time when Bangladesh-India relations, defence cooperation, Sheikh Hasina’s possible extradition and potential high-level visits remain important subjects of diplomatic discussion.
