A 4.9-magnitude earthquake struck Chamoli district in India’s Uttarakhand state on Tuesday night, October 6, with tremors reportedly felt in the national capital Delhi and surrounding areas.

The earthquake occurred at around 10:20pm, according to India’s National Centre for Seismology (NCS).

The tremor caused concern among residents in several parts of Delhi, with people taking to social media to share their experiences. A resident of the Safdarjung area in south Delhi said they were sitting on a sofa when they noticed it shaking during the earthquake.

Alongside reports of concern, social media platform X was also filled with memes and humorous reactions following the tremor. Users shared popular scenes and GIFs from films and television series to describe their experiences.

One user shared a popular GIF from the Indian series ‘Panchayat’ while joking about how people in Delhi react when an earthquake measures below magnitude 5.

Earlier on the same day, another earthquake measuring 4.5 magnitude struck Nagaon district in the northeastern Indian state of Assam.

According to the NCS, the Assam earthquake originated at a depth of around 33 kilometres beneath the Earth’s surface.

The two earthquakes occurring in different parts of India on the same day prompted considerable discussion on social media.
