The government has proposed doubling financial assistance for poor patients suffering from critical illnesses such as cancer, kidney disease, liver cirrhosis, stroke-induced paralysis, congenital heart disease, and thalassemia.
Under the proposed budget for FY 2026–27, the one-time support has been increased from Tk 50,000 to Tk 100,000, to be provided annually.
Finance Minister Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury announced the proposal while presenting the national budget in Parliament on Thursday.
Support Through Hospital Social Service Programs
The assistance is delivered through the Hospital Social Service Program under the Department of Social Services of the Ministry of Social Welfare. The budget notes that many patients suffering from such diseases are unable to afford treatment, putting severe financial pressure on families.
Expansion of Social Protection
The proposal is part of a broader expansion of the social safety net aimed at supporting vulnerable populations.
The total budget for FY 2026–27 is set at Tk 938,000 crore, with a revenue target of Tk 695,000 crore, resulting in a fiscal deficit of Tk 243,000 crore.
The government plans to finance the deficit through both domestic and external borrowing.
Economic Outlook
The budget targets inflation at 7.5 percent and GDP growth at 6.5 percent for the next fiscal year.
Experts say the increased assistance will provide significant relief to low-income families facing life-threatening illnesses.
