The government has proposed one of the largest allocations in history for the education sector in the national budget for FY 2026–27, setting aside Tk 136,606 crore.
Finance Minister Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury presented the budget in Parliament on Thursday.
Major Investment in Education
The increased allocation reflects the government’s focus on building skilled human resources and strengthening the foundation of a knowledge-based economy. The investment is seen as a key part of the country’s long-term development strategy.
Overall Budget Overview
The total proposed budget stands at Tk 938,000 crore, making it one of the largest in the country’s history. The budget emphasizes development priorities, social protection expansion, and continued infrastructure spending.
Revenue collection is targeted at Tk 695,000 crore, leaving a fiscal deficit of Tk 243,000 crore.
The government plans to finance this gap through both domestic and external borrowing.
Economic Concerns
Economists say the large allocation for education could positively impact long-term human capital development. However, the high deficit and reliance on borrowing may pose short-term challenges to fiscal stability.
Overall, the budget reflects strong ambitions for development and social investment, while raising questions about implementation capacity.
