Bangladesh’s e-commerce platform Ghorer Bazar has been fined Tk 787,514 by the National Board of Revenue (NBR) over alleged tax-related irregularities.

According to sources familiar with the matter, the penalty relates to tax compliance issues for the 2023–24 and 2024–25 fiscal years and was imposed under Section 147 of the applicable Income Tax law.

Separately, discussions have emerged on social media regarding the quality of certain products sold by the company and the marketing of some items as “organic,” “pure,” or “natural.” Several users have questioned whether these descriptions accurately reflect the products they purchased.

These social media claims have not been independently verified, and no regulatory authority has publicly confirmed the allegations or announced the outcome of any investigation regarding product quality.

The news outlet attempted to contact Chief Executive Officer Nazmus Sakib for comment. Although he did not respond to phone calls, he later stated via text message that all media inquiries should be directed to the company’s legal team through its official email.

Attempts were also made to obtain comments from Managing Director Jamshed Majumder. However, no response had been received by the time this report was published.

Industry experts say that maintaining consumer confidence in the e-commerce sector requires compliance with tax laws, accurate product representations, strong quality assurance, and transparent handling of customer complaints.
