The Bangladesh government has declared a 7-day holiday for the upcoming Eid-ul-Fitr celebration, extending the holiday period by adding an extra day off.

In a cabinet meeting chaired by Prime Minister Tarique Rahman at the Secretariat on March 5, a proposal to extend the holiday was approved. With this, the total holiday duration will now last for 7 consecutive days. The extended holiday includes the previously announced Eid break, along with the addition of March 18, making it a total of 7 days off.

Eid-ul-Fitr is expected to fall on March 20 or 21, depending on the moon sighting. The Ministry of Public Administration had already set a 5-day holiday from March 19 to 23, assuming March 21 as the Eid date. The new addition of March 18 brings the total to seven days.

Additionally, the government has announced a public holiday on March 17 for Shabe Qadr, further increasing the holiday period.

The government has taken this step to ensure the smooth travel of citizens and to enhance the celebrations with family gatherings during the auspicious occasion of Eid.
