Women, children and a pregnant woman stranded for up to 70 hours; BGB strengthens surveillance along border areas

After remaining stranded in no-man’s land for up to 70 hours, 21 people—including women, children and a pregnant woman—were finally taken back by India's Border Security Force (BSF) from the Thakurgaon and Panchagarh border areas. Meanwhile, fresh allegations of push-in attempts surfaced at the Roumari border in Kurigram.

The individuals were removed from the zero line late Monday night after spending days in harsh conditions following failed attempts to enter Bangladesh.

At the Mashalgaon border in Haripur upazila of Thakurgaon, 11 people, including children and a pregnant woman, remained stranded for nearly 48 hours. They were reportedly brought to the border on Friday night in an attempt to enter Bangladesh, but members of the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) prevented the move, forcing them to stay in the no-man’s land area.

According to Lieutenant Colonel Abdullah Al Moin Hasan, Commanding Officer of Dinajpur 42 BGB Battalion, the group consisted of three men, four women and four children. The BSF later took them back on Sunday night.

In a similar incident, another group of 10 people who were allegedly being pushed into Bangladesh through the Barabari border in Panchagarh were returned to Indian territory after spending nearly 70 hours near the border. BGB personnel blocked the initial push-in attempt on Friday morning.

Despite continuous rainfall and adverse weather conditions, the group remained outdoors for several days before being removed by the BSF around midnight on Sunday.

Lieutenant Colonel Md. Sirajul Islam, Commanding Officer of Nilphamari 56 BGB Battalion, said the BSF communicated with BGB before taking the individuals back and that the border situation is currently under control.

However, tensions persisted at the Roumari border in Kurigram, where residents and local authorities alleged that fresh attempts were made on Sunday evening to push several people into Bangladesh through the Bokbanda and Jhaubari border points.

Upon receiving the information, BGB members and local residents took precautionary positions and successfully prevented the alleged push-in attempts.

Local sources claim that multiple such attempts have been made in recent days. Authorities say enhanced border patrols and increased vigilance by both security personnel and residents have helped prevent unauthorized crossings.

BGB officials stated that surveillance and patrol operations have been further strengthened to counter any future push-in attempts or illegal border crossings.
