Co-hosts the United States made a dream start to their FIFA World Cup campaign with a commanding 4-1 victory over Paraguay in Los Angeles on Friday.

A brace from Folarin Balogun and a stunning late strike from Gio Reyna helped the Americans secure all three points in front of a packed crowd of more than 70,000 spectators.

The hosts took the lead after just seven minutes when Paraguayan defender Damian Bobadilla inadvertently turned the ball into his own net. The early breakthrough energized the home side, who dominated possession and attacking play throughout the first half.

Balogun doubled the advantage in the 31st minute, finishing calmly after a well-worked move involving Christian Pulisic and Antonee Robinson. Just before halftime, the striker struck again, producing an excellent solo effort to make it 3-0 and put the match beyond Paraguay’s reach.

Paraguay improved after the break and managed to pull one goal back through substitute Mauricio. However, any hopes of a comeback were ended when Gio Reyna curled a spectacular right-footed shot into the far corner during stoppage time.

Despite the emphatic victory, the United States suffered a potential setback as captain Christian Pulisic was substituted at halftime, raising concerns about his fitness for the remainder of the tournament.

The result gives the Americans an early advantage in Group D, which also includes Australia and Turkey.

With an impressive performance on opening night, the United States signaled its ambition to make a deep run in the tournament and improve on its best World Cup finish since reaching the quarterfinals in 2002.
