Former Inspector General of Police (IGP) of Bangladesh, Benazir Ahmed, has been arrested in Dubai in connection with corruption cases filed by Bangladesh’s Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC).

The development was confirmed on Sunday (June 14) by Bangladesh Home Affairs Adviser Salahuddin Ahmed while addressing the National Parliament under Rule 300.

According to the minister, Benazir Ahmed was detained on June 12 by Dubai Police with the assistance of Interpol. He is currently being held in Dubai custody. Authorities in Dubai have informed Bangladesh that a formal extradition request must be submitted within 30 days of the date of arrest.

The government is now preparing the necessary legal procedures to bring the former police chief back to Bangladesh as soon as possible.

Describing the arrest as a significant achievement, the minister said that no individual is above the law, regardless of influence or status.

Earlier, in February 2025, a Bangladeshi court approved the issuance of an Interpol Red Notice against Benazir Ahmed following a request from the ACC.

The ACC filed four separate cases in December 2024 against Benazir Ahmed, his wife, and his daughters, alleging illegal wealth accumulation and concealment of asset information. Investigators alleged that the family had amassed approximately Tk 74 crore in assets through illicit means.

Officials said the extradition process is expected to begin shortly, after which Benazir Ahmed will be brought back to Bangladesh to face legal proceedings in the corruption cases.
