State Minister for Foreign Affairs Shama Obaed Islam has called for greater recognition of the sacrifices made by Bangladeshi peacekeepers, saying they continue to risk their lives to uphold global peace and protect the country's reputation on the international stage.

Speaking as the chief guest at a dialogue titled “Contribution of Bangladeshi Peacekeepers to World Peace” at the CIRDAP auditorium in Dhaka on Monday (June 8), she said many people in Bangladesh do not fully realize the extent of the achievements and sacrifices made by the country's peacekeepers.

The event was organized by the Defense Journalists Association of Bangladesh (DJAB).

Shama Obaed said that during her visits to several African countries and international conferences, she witnessed the deep respect and appreciation local communities have for Bangladeshi peacekeepers. She noted that their achievements have significantly enhanced Bangladesh’s image around the world.

Paying tribute to the families of peacekeepers, she said relatives often send their loved ones on dangerous missions without knowing whether they will return safely, driven by patriotism and commitment to the nation.

Speakers at the event highlighted that Bangladesh’s success in United Nations peacekeeping operations stems not only from military professionalism but also from humanitarian values, discipline, leadership, and dedication. They cited Bangladesh’s contributions to rebuilding Sierra Leone, deploying the first all-female Muslim police unit in Haiti, and supporting healthcare and infrastructure development across Africa.

The keynote paper was presented by Dr. Towhidul Haque, Associate Professor at the Institute of Social Welfare and Research of the University of Dhaka. He noted that Bangladesh began its peacekeeping journey in 1988 with just 15 military observers and has since become one of the world's leading contributors to UN peacekeeping missions.

According to the presentation, more than 206,000 Bangladeshi peacekeepers have served in over 63 missions across 43 countries. Currently, 4,212 members of the Bangladesh Armed Forces and Police are deployed in various UN missions worldwide.

Dr. Haque also stated that 175 Bangladeshi peacekeepers have sacrificed their lives while serving in international peace operations, demonstrating the country's unwavering commitment to global peace and security.

Speakers emphasized that Bangladesh continues to play a significant role in advancing the UN’s current theme, “Invest in Peace,” and that the dedication, professionalism, and humanitarian efforts of Bangladeshi peacekeepers remain a source of hope in an increasingly unstable world.
