Navy-supervised bridge inaugurated by DNCC Administrator Shafiqul Islam Khan Milton

The much-anticipated Aftabnagar-Banasree connecting footbridge over the Rampura Canal has been officially inaugurated. The project was financed and initiated by Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC).
DNCC Administrator Md. Shafiqul Islam Khan Milton inaugurated the bridge by unveiling a plaque at Aftabnagar on Wednesday (September 23), opening it to public use.
The new bridge is expected to ease the long-standing commuting difficulties faced by residents of the densely populated Aftabnagar and Banasree residential areas on opposite sides of the Rampura Canal.
Previously, pedestrians had to take a longer route to travel between the two areas. The new connection will allow residents to cross the canal directly and is expected to save around 30 to 40 minutes of travel time each day.
Speaking at the inauguration ceremony, DNCC Administrator Md. Shafiqul Islam Khan Milton said the project was implemented in response to a long-standing demand from residents of Aftabnagar and Banasree.
He said the bridge would make daily commuting easier while saving valuable time for city residents.
The DNCC administrator said development initiatives in the area would not be limited to pedestrian connectivity. Construction of two additional steel bridges over the Rampura Canal is currently progressing. The bridges will facilitate the movement of heavy vehicles.
Referring to future urban transport challenges, Milton said traffic pressure on major roads in the capital could increase once metro rail (MRT) projects begin operating. In that context, the newly constructed and proposed bridges could serve as alternative routes or bypasses and help reduce traffic pressure on the main roads around Rampura and Badda.
The connecting bridge project was implemented with funding from DNCC and under the overall supervision and technical management of the Bangladesh Navy.
DNCC Chief Executive Officer Mir Khayerul Alam, Chief Engineer Brigadier General Rakibul Hasan, Chief Waste Management Officer Commodore Humayun Kabir, Chief Health Officer Brigadier General Imrul Kayes and Additional Chief Engineer Khandaker Mahbub Hossain were present at the inauguration ceremony.
Local community leaders and representatives of the Bangladesh Navy also attended the event and welcomed the DNCC initiative.
