Mariam Khatun’s Death: MP Gazi Nazrul Sent to Four-Day Remand Again

Satkhira-4 lawmaker Gazi Nazrul Islam has been placed on a second four-day remand in a case filed over the death of his second wife, Mariam Khatun.
On Thursday (September 24), Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Mohammad Ripon Hossain passed the order after hearing the remand plea. Earlier, investigation officer and DB Tejgaon Division Inspector Mohammad Salahuddin sought seven days of remand to question Gazi Nazrul. The court ultimately granted four days.
Mariam’s father, S M Masum Billah, filed the case with Sher-e-Bangla Nagar Police Station accusing the defendants of abetment to suicide. Gazi Nazrul Islam, his first wife Maksuda Islam and Mariam’s maternal uncle Obaidur Rahman have been named as accused.
On September 20, police recovered the hanging body of 19-year-old Mariam Khatun from a flat at NAM Bhaban opposite the Jatiya Sangsad complex. Gazi Nazrul and his first wife were subsequently taken into police custody.
On September 21, a court granted Gazi Nazrul four days of remand and Maksuda one day. After the first round of questioning ended, police produced Gazi Nazrul before the court on Thursday and sought another seven days of remand. The court granted four days.
Meanwhile, Obaidur Rahman, another accused in the case, was sent to jail by a court on September 23.
