BNP Will Have No Place for Leaders Who Betrayed the Party: LGRD State Minister

Leaders who “betrayed” the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) in the last election will have no place in the party in the future, said Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives (LGRD) State Minister Mir Shahe Alam.

He made the remarks on Thursday (September 24) at a cheque distribution programme for families affected by the recent floods in Banshkhali, Chattogram. His remarks were also reported by several local news outlets.

Mir Shahe Alam said the BNP does not pay heed to threats and that those who betrayed the party during the last election would not be given a place in the party. He also said those who worked for the party during difficult times would receive all legitimate benefits.

Referring to the upcoming local government elections, the state minister said the elections could begin in January next year and called on party leaders and activists to start preparations. He also urged them to work alongside the people.

The minister also referred to the BNP-Jamaat alliance government of 2001. He said then-BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia had included two Jamaat leaders in her cabinet, claiming that the move was intended to remove the “Razakar” label associated with them. He said Jamaat has now forgotten that history.

The programme was informed that Banshkhali and Satkania upazilas of Chattogram were severely affected by floods in July. Around 12,000 houses were reportedly destroyed in Banshkhali.

As part of the rehabilitation initiative, the Chattogram District Council distributed Tk 30,000 each to 510 affected families in Banshkhali on Thursday to help them rebuild their homes. The total allocation for the assistance is Tk 15.3 million.
