Pope Leo Urges Courage to End Ukraine War in First Christmas Address
Published : 00:36, 26 December 2025
In his first Christmas Day address as pontiff, Pope Leo XIV delivered a powerful appeal for peace, placing a special emphasis on the nearly four-year conflict in Ukraine and urging both sides to show “courage” to end the war. Speaking from St.
Peter’s Square at the traditional “Urbi et Orbi” (to the city and the world) blessing, the pope called on Ukraine and Russia to embark on direct, sincere and respectful dialogue aimed at achieving a negotiated end to hostilities. His message resonated with crowds gathered in the Vatican and millions watching globally.
Pope Leo urged that the clamour of weapons cease and appealed to the international community to support efforts toward a peaceful resolution.
He emphasised that peace must be rooted in dialogue rather than continued confrontation, encouraging both parties, with global backing, to find the bravery needed to engage in talks.
The pontiff’s Christmas address, delivered from the loggia of St. Peter’s Basilica, went beyond Ukraine. He lamented the suffering caused by wars and conflict around the world, from the Middle East to parts of Africa and Southeast Asia, and highlighted the plight of refugees, migrants, and civilians displaced by violence.
Drawing on the biblical narrative of Jesus’ birth in a humble setting, Pope Leo invited the faithful to reflect on current human suffering and the moral imperative to work for peace.
Pope Leo’s speech also addressed the dire humanitarian conditions in Gaza, noting the struggle of civilians enduring harsh winter conditions after prolonged conflict, and he prayed for justice, peace, and stability in regions wracked by war.
The call for courage to end the Ukraine war came amid ongoing U.S.-led diplomatic negotiations aimed at establishing a peace framework acceptable to both Kyiv and Moscow.
While some talks have taken place, direct negotiations between Ukrainian and Russian officials have yet to materialise in a breakthrough agreement. Pope Leo’s message underscored the urgent need for renewed commitment to peace.
The Christmas address reflects a broader papal vision emphasising compassion, dialogue, and reconciliation in the face of global crises and aligns with the Catholic Church’s longstanding tradition of advocating for peaceful solutions to international conflicts.
