The 2026 Winter Olympics in Milan and Cortina d’Ampezzo, Italy, officially got underway with a spectacular and multi-venue opening ceremony on 6 February 2026, marking the start of the Games that will run through 22 February with athletes from more than 90 nations.

The ceremony, themed “Armonia” (Harmony), was staged across four locations: San Siro Stadium in Milan, Livigno, Predazzo, and in the streets of Cortina, making it the most geographically spread-out Winter Olympics opening to date.

Thousands of spectators gathered at Milan’s iconic San Siro Stadium as Italy’s President Sergio Mattarella formally declared the Games open, following artistic performances that blended Italy’s rich cultural heritage with modern spectacle.

A highlight of the evening was Italian tenor Andrea Bocelli’s stirring rendition of “Nessun Dorma” as the Olympic flame was carried into the stadium and the cauldrons were lit one in Milan and one in Cortina, a first in Olympic history.

The parade of nations commenced with Greece leading as tradition dictates, followed by delegations from across the world. Athletes entered with unique uniforms and enthusiastic cheers, with the Italian team closing the procession to thunderous applause.

While most delegations received warm welcomes, there were mixed reactions from parts of the crowd to certain appearances on the stadium screen.

Musical performances and cultural segments underscored the unity theme, including productions featuring renowned Italian artists and international stars. The event blended high artistry with Olympic tradition, showcasing Italy’s role as host and the global spirit of the Games.

With the official opening complete, competition is now underway across disciplines including curling, ice hockey, snowboarding, and figure skating, with the first medals set to be awarded shortly.
