Japan’s Ruling Party Projected to Win Majority in Snap Election

Japan’s governing Liberal Democratic Party (LDP), led by Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi, is projected to secure a clear majority in the country’s snap lower-house election, according to early results and exit polls.
Media projections indicate the LDP has surpassed the 233 seats needed for a majority in the 465-member House of Representatives.
Estimates from different outlets place the party’s expected total between roughly 271 and more than 300 seats, with some projections suggesting as many as 328 seats, one of the party’s strongest performances in decades.
With its coalition partner, the Japan Innovation Party, the ruling bloc is expected to secure a large majority and possibly a two-thirds supermajority, giving the government stronger control over legislation and the ability to override the upper chamber if necessary.
The election was called only months after Takaichi became Japan’s first female prime minister, as she sought a fresh mandate for her conservative economic and security agenda.
Her campaign focused on tax relief, increased defense spending, and measures to address inflation and economic uncertainty.
Analysts say the projected victory reflects voter support for her leadership style and policy direction, as well as the fragmented state of opposition parties.
Key issues during the campaign included the rising cost of living, regional security tensions, and Japan’s economic outlook.
If confirmed, the result would restore the LDP’s single-party majority in the lower house and consolidate Takaichi’s political authority, allowing her government to pursue major policy initiatives over the coming years.
