321 Publishers to Skip Book Fair if Held on February 20

A total of 321 publishers have announced they will not participate in the Amar Ekushey Book Fair if it begins on February 20, citing humanitarian concerns, economic risks, and fears of low reader turnout.
In a joint statement, the publishers said the decision to hold the fair from February 20 is unrealistic and could push the publishing industry into deeper uncertainty. They argued that the timing—just days before the start of Ramadan—would significantly reduce visitor numbers, as readers may be less willing to attend the fair amid fasting, heavy traffic, and hot weather.
The publishers warned that a reader-less fair would create financial losses for both organizers and participating publishers. Many of them said the industry has already been going through a difficult period over the past year and a half, and another unsuccessful fair could put their remaining capital at risk.
They also raised humanitarian concerns, noting that many stall workers are university students. According to the statement, asking students to work long hours while fasting and managing iftar and nightly prayers would be inhumane.
The publishers further argued that holding the fair immediately after the national election and during Ramadan would defeat the purpose of the event, which is meant to be a lively gathering place for readers, writers, and publishers.
Despite the objections, the Bangla Academy has confirmed that the fair is scheduled to begin on February 20, a departure from the long-standing tradition of starting on February 1.
The group of publishers said they would be willing to participate if the fair is held after Eid-ul-Fitr and pledged full cooperation to make the event successful under those circumstances.
