Delhi Police have detained Cockroach Janata Party (CJP) founder Abhijit Deepak ahead of the party’s proposed protest at Jantar Mantar in India’s capital. YouTuber Dhruv Rathee was also reportedly detained from his residence in Gurugram on Saturday.
According to NDTV, police officers boarded the aircraft carrying Deepak and detained him shortly after it landed at Delhi airport on Saturday morning. Deepak broadcast the police operation live on Instagram.
In the video he posted, a team of Delhi Police personnel can be seen entering the aircraft. Two other CJP members, Saurabh Das and Ashutosh Ranka, were also reportedly detained from the plane.
Meanwhile, citing police sources, reports said Rathee was detained from his residence in Sector 56 of Gurugram on Saturday. He had reportedly planned to travel to Delhi to participate in the CJP’s proposed demonstration.
The CJP called the protest at Jantar Mantar to demand the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar and electoral reforms. Delhi Police have not granted permission for the event and have increased security across several parts of the capital to prevent potential law-and-order problems.
Under the police plan, officers aim to prevent protesters from entering the New Delhi district and promptly remove anyone who enters restricted areas. Security has been tightened around key locations, including Jantar Mantar, Janpath, the Election Commission office and Delhi Police headquarters.
Surveillance has also been stepped up across the city. Police are using public-address systems to warn people against gathering, while authorities have said those participating in the unauthorised demonstration could face legal action.
Despite the restrictions, CJP founder Abhijit Deepak said the party’s volunteers and supporters would take part in the protest at Jantar Mantar. He also questioned whether restrictions on transport, imposed amid concerns about public inconvenience, could end up causing further disruption for ordinary residents.
