Guwahati witnessed a remarkable run-fest as India defeated the West Indies by eight wickets in the second ODI on Wednesday. Chasing a massive target of 406, India reached 406 for 2 in just 43.3 overs, securing the three-match series 2-0 with one game remaining.

A total of 811 runs were scored across the two innings, making it the highest aggregate in an India-West Indies ODI. India’s successful chase of 406 also became the second-highest successful run chase in ODI history.

After winning the toss, India opted to bowl first. The West Indies responded with their highest ODI total, posting 405 for seven in 50 overs. John Campbell scored 101, captain Shai Hope made 104 and Amir Jangoo smashed 114. It was only the sixth time in ODI history that three batters had scored centuries in the same innings.

India’s chase began in aggressive fashion, with Rohit Sharma scoring a brilliant 101. His century also took him past the 12,000-run mark in ODI cricket and was his 35th hundred in the format. Rohit and Gill put together a 255-run opening partnership to put India firmly in control.

Captain Shubman Gill then produced a record-breaking performance. He remained unbeaten on 223 from 133 balls, hitting 26 fours and eight sixes. Gill reached his double century in just 117 balls, setting a new world record for the fastest double century in men’s ODI cricket. The previous record belonged to Ishan Kishan, who reached 200 in 126 balls against Bangladesh in 2022.

Gill’s unbeaten 223 was also his second ODI double century and became the highest individual score in a successful ODI run chase.

For India, Gurnoor Brar, Ravindra Jadeja and Kuldeep Yadav claimed two wickets each. Kuldeep also reached the milestone of 200 ODI wickets during the match.
