After days of intense tension and uncertainty, the United States and Iran have agreed to a conditional two-week ceasefire, according to confirmation from Washington. U.S. President Donald Trump stated that the ceasefire would take effect once Iran allows international vessels to pass “fully and safely” through the Strait of Hormuz.
Following the announcement, residents of Tehran were seen celebrating in the streets. According to Al Jazeera’s live coverage, people gathered across parts of the Iranian capital on Wednesday morning local time to welcome the ceasefire agreement.
Images circulating in the media showed crowds waving Iranian flags and holding pictures of the country’s late supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, while chanting slogans. The
BBC reported that Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif played a key role in mediating the ceasefire discussions. He said Iran had agreed to open the Strait of Hormuz to international shipping, allowing the ceasefire to take effect immediately.
Sharif also stated that Iran, the United States, and their allies had agreed to halt hostilities across several areas, including Lebanon.
However, international media reports suggest that isolated attacks have continued in some regions despite the ceasefire announcement.
Pakistan has also invited representatives from both Iran and the United States to attend a meeting in Islamabad on April 10 to discuss a final agreement aimed at resolving the conflict.
Meanwhile, the latest ceasefire news has already started to push global oil prices downward in international markets.
