Good news may be on the way for millions of football fans in Bangladesh. After weeks of uncertainty, the path to broadcasting the 2026 FIFA World Cup on local television appears close to being finalized. If all goes according to plan, Bangladesh Television (BTV) is expected to sign an official agreement with FIFA on Wednesday, paving the way for a formal announcement regarding World Cup coverage.

According to a reliable source familiar with the matter, BTV has made significant progress in direct negotiations with FIFA over the broadcasting rights for the tournament. Once a final agreement is reached, the state-owned broadcaster will be able to bring the World Cup matches to viewers across Bangladesh.

Earlier, the broadcasting rights for Bangladesh had reportedly been awarded to Singapore-based company Springbok. However, FIFA later terminated its agreement with the company. Sources said BTV was unwilling to proceed with a deal involving Springbok due to what it considered excessive financial demands. As a result, the broadcaster initiated direct discussions with FIFA in an effort to secure the rights independently.

Sources further indicated that if BTV successfully acquires the broadcasting rights, two private television channels in Bangladesh may also be granted the opportunity to air World Cup matches. However, none of the parties involved have agreed to comment publicly before the agreement is finalized.

Over the past several weeks, uncertainty surrounding the World Cup broadcast rights has been a major concern for sports enthusiasts across the country. Many viewers, particularly those who rely on free-to-air television, were unsure whether they would be able to watch the tournament.

Industry observers believe the anticipated agreement would eliminate those concerns and ensure that millions of football fans, from urban centers to rural communities, can enjoy the world’s biggest football tournament without additional subscription costs.

All eyes are now on Wednesday’s expected announcement, which could finally bring clarity to the World Cup broadcasting situation in Bangladesh and end months of speculation among football supporters.
