The Bangladesh Energy Regulatory Commission (BERC) has announced an increase in electricity prices at both the wholesale and consumer levels. The new tariff structure was unveiled at a press conference on Wednesday and will take effect retroactively from June 1.

Under the revised rates, the wholesale electricity price has been increased from Tk 7.04 per kilowatt-hour (kWh) to Tk 8.39 per kWh, marking an increase of Tk 1.39 per unit or approximately 19.85 percent.

At the consumer level, the average electricity tariff has been raised from Tk 9.11 per kWh to Tk 10.63 per kWh, an increase of Tk 1.52 per unit, representing an average rise of 16.68 percent.

BERC has also approved an increase in electricity transmission charges. The transmission tariff has been raised from Tk 0.3135 per kWh to Tk 0.3886 per kWh. In practical terms, the charge has increased from around 31 paisa to nearly 39 paisa per unit, reflecting a 23.96 percent increase.

The Power Grid Company of Bangladesh PLC (PGCB), the country’s sole electricity transmission company, had previously proposed raising transmission charges from 30-31 paisa per unit to 48-49 paisa per unit.

Meanwhile, the Bangladesh Power Development Board (BPDB) had sought an increase in wholesale electricity prices ranging from Tk 1.20 to Tk 1.50 per unit, equivalent to a hike of between 17 and 21 percent.

The latest adjustment follows an earlier increase implemented on February 29, 2024, when the government raised the wholesale electricity tariff by 5 percent, from Tk 6.70 to Tk 7.04 per unit. At the same time, consumer-level electricity prices were increased by 8.5 percent.

Energy sector officials say the new tariff adjustment is aimed at addressing rising generation, transmission, and operational costs within the power sector. However, the increase is expected to raise electricity expenses for residential, commercial, and industrial consumers across the country.

The announcement comes as authorities continue efforts to ensure financial sustainability in Bangladesh’s power sector while maintaining a stable electricity supply nationwide.
