Commerce Minister Khandker Abdul Muqtadir has said the government is committed to creating a business-friendly environment in the country. He noted that the new Import Policy is now at its final stage and will be unveiled soon.
The minister made the remarks at a meeting with business leaders held on Sunday morning at the conference room of the Ministry of Commerce.
He also said that a separate committee comprising representatives from the business community will be formed to simplify services provided by the ministries of commerce, industries, textiles, and jute.
The commerce minister said the role of the Federation of Bangladesh Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FBCCI) needs to be further strengthened and made more active in protecting the interests of businesses and effectively presenting their demands to the government. He added that the organization should play a significant role in securing policy support through constructive and positive pressure when necessary. However, he stressed that FBCCI must not be used for any political purposes.
“We want to see an FBCCI that truly works as a unified platform for all businesspeople,” he said.
He also mentioned that FBCCI should work as a supportive partner of the Ministry of Commerce by providing practical and realistic opinions in policy-making.
Muqtadir said competent, visionary, and energetic leadership is essential to make the organization more dynamic and effective. He added that the leadership of FBCCI should come from within the business community to ensure that the organization can effectively safeguard the interests of entrepreneurs.
Additional Secretary (Export) of the Ministry of Commerce and Administrator of FBCCI Md. Abdur Rahim Khan also spoke at the meeting.
Among the business representatives who spoke were former BGMEA president SM Fazlul Haque; former FBCCI president Mir Nasir Hossain; BKMEA president Mohammad Hatem; former FBCCI director Nasrin Fatema Awal; Abdul Haque; President of Bangladesh CNG Machineries Importers Association Zakir Hossain Nayan; General Secretary of Bangladesh Super Market Association Zakir Hossain; former FBCCI director Gias Uddin Chowdhury Khokon; former president of Rangamati Chamber of Commerce and Industry Belayet Hossain Bhuiyan; former FBCCI vice-president Nizam Uddin Rajesh; and former director Syed Bakhtiar, among others.
