Power Generation Resumes at First Unit of Barapukuria Thermal Power Plant

Power generation has resumed at the 125 MW first unit of the Barapukuria Thermal Power Plant in Parbatipur after a two-day shutdown.
Chief Engineer, Md. Abu Bakkar Siddique confirmed on Friday night that the unit has been restarted on a trial basis. Around 55 to 60 MW of electricity has been supplied to the national grid since 8:00 PM. The unit requires approximately 700 metric tons of coal per day for operation.
According to sources, the unit suddenly went offline on April 22 due to mechanical faults caused by stones mixed with coal. Engineers worked intensively to fix the issue, enabling the unit to resume operation by Friday night.
With the first unit back in operation, the power supply situation in Parbatipur and eight northern districts is expected to improve, significantly reducing load shedding.
The 525 MW coal-fired plant operates using coal supplied from the nearby Barapukuria coal mine. However, the second unit with a capacity of 125 MW has remained shut down since November 2020, previously generating around 60–65 MW.
The chief engineer expressed optimism that the resumed operation will ensure a more stable electricity supply in the region and help ease load shedding.
