A moderate earthquake measuring 5.4 on the Richter scale struck Bangladesh on Friday afternoon, with tremors felt in Dhaka and several other regions of the country.
The Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD) confirmed that the quake occurred at around 1:52 pm and that the epicentre was located in Ashashuni Upazila of Satkhira District in the southwest.
The shaking lasted for several seconds and was felt strongly enough that many residents in Dhaka, Khulna, Sylhet and other areas reported noticeable movement of buildings and structures.
In Satkhira, locals described the tremors as intense, with some saying that structures seemed to sway back and forth during the event. Although the quake caused panic among many people who were in homes, workplaces and mosques, there were no immediate reports of casualties or significant damage.
Seismologists noted that the epicentre lies roughly 188 kilometres southwest of Dhaka, and while the quake was moderate in magnitude, it was widely felt across a large geographic area due to its shallow depth. Authorities are continuing to monitor seismic activity and have advised the public to stay alert for any further tremors.
This earthquake was one of several tremors reported across Bangladesh in recent days, reflecting ongoing seismic activity in the region.
