Walkway Project Along Dhaka Canals to Be Implemented by 2028

The Government of Bangladesh has announced an ambitious plan to clear all canals in the capital city and implement a walkway project along their banks by the year 2028.
During an inspection of Manda Canal in the city, the State Minister for Road Transport and Bridges, Habibur Rashid Habib, said the initiative is part of a broader effort to free Dhaka of waterlogging and improve urban living conditions.
He stated that under the Prime Minister’s directive, authorities will recover all encroached canals in Dhaka and develop walkways on both sides, transforming these waterways into public recreational spaces and boosting the city’s resilience against flooding.
The State Minister explained that various government ministries will jointly inspect the canals and take necessary measures for clearing them. He also appealed to land grabbers to voluntarily vacate canal areas so that restoration work can proceed without delay.
Officials believe that the project, which will entail restoring the natural flow of water, removing illegal encroachments, and building pedestrian walkways and green spaces along the canals, will not only mitigate waterlogging but also provide improved public spaces for residents.
Authorities plan to begin systematic canal recovery and construction activities soon, with the goal of completing the entire project across the capital by 2028, in line with the government’s urban development agenda.
