Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has suggested that effective mosquito control strategies can be developed by observing local conditions rather than undertaking overseas study tours.

The remark came after a proposal was submitted to the Prime Minister’s Office seeking approval for a visit to Florida, USA, by Chattogram City Corporation Mayor Dr Shahadat Hossain and five other city officials to observe innovative mosquito control programmes.

Confirming the matter, Deputy Press Secretary Zahidul Islam Rony said the Prime Minister questioned the necessity of travelling abroad to learn mosquito eradication techniques.

According to the Deputy Press Secretary, the Prime Minister remarked, “There is no need to travel to Florida in the United States to learn or observe mosquito control methods. Standing beside any local stagnant water body for two or three hours after sunset would be enough to come up with many innovative ideas for mosquito control.”

The Prime Minister’s comments underscore the importance of understanding local realities and developing context-based solutions to address public health challenges.

The issue comes at a time when concerns over dengue and other mosquito-borne diseases are increasing across different parts of the country. The Prime Minister emphasised the need for practical, locally driven initiatives rather than relying solely on foreign exposure visits.

Officials said the proposal had been placed before the Prime Minister’s Office as part of efforts to explore innovative mosquito management practices.
