Veteran Politician Tofail Ahmed Laid to Rest Beside His Mother’s Grave in Bhola

Veteran politician, former Industries and Commerce Minister, and member of the Awami League Advisory Council, Tofail Ahmed, was laid to rest beside his mother's grave at his family cemetery in Bhola, bringing an end to a long and influential political career.
His second funeral prayer was held on Tuesday afternoon at Bhola Government High School Ground, where thousands of political leaders, government officials, relatives, supporters, and local residents gathered to pay their final respects.
Before the funeral prayer, he was accorded a state guard of honour in recognition of his contributions to the nation.
Earlier, at around 1:40 pm, a helicopter carrying his body landed at the Bhola helipad. The body was then taken by ambulance to the funeral venue. Following the prayer service, his remains were transported to his ancestral home in Koralia village of Bhola Sadar, where he was buried beside his mother.
### Passed Away After Prolonged Illness
Tofail Ahmed passed away at approximately 3:30 pm on June 1 while undergoing treatment at a hospital in Dhaka. He had been suffering from various age-related health complications for an extended period.
He was 82 years old at the time of his death and is survived by a daughter, along with numerous political colleagues, admirers, and well-wishers.
### From Student Leader to National Figure
Tofail Ahmed emerged as a prominent political figure through student politics and played a significant role during Bangladesh’s independence movement. He later became one of the country's most influential politicians and served multiple terms as a Member of Parliament.
Throughout his career, he held several key ministerial portfolios, including the Ministries of Industries and Commerce, and remained an important policymaker within the Awami League for decades.
### Arrests and Political Struggles
His political journey included periods of imprisonment and political persecution. During various periods of political unrest and military rule, Tofail Ahmed was arrested and detained on multiple occasions.
Despite facing political challenges and changing national circumstances, he remained active in public life and continued to play a significant role in Bangladesh’s political landscape.

His death has prompted an outpouring of grief across the country, particularly in his home district of Bhola. Political leaders, supporters, and citizens who attended his funeral remembered him as a seasoned statesman, a veteran of Bangladesh’s political history, and a leader deeply connected to the ideals of the Liberation War.
With his passing, Bangladesh has lost one of the most recognizable figures of its post-independence political era.
