Information and Broadcasting Minister Zahir Uddin Swapon has said that the government will adopt a “zero tolerance” policy against any form of unethical obstruction or interference in the professional practice of mainstream media.

Speaking to journalists at his office at the ministry on Monday morning, he said ensuring a fully free and transparent media environment is a key objective of the government.

The minister referred to a recent incident in which journalists were allegedly attacked by security and cleaning staff while collecting news at a private institution. He said the matter is being investigated, and necessary actions will be taken.

He stressed that ensuring the safety of journalists is the responsibility of the concerned institutions, adding that the media plays a vital role in presenting all sectors of society transparently to the public.

Praising television and live media journalism, Swapon said live broadcasting ensures higher accountability as there is little scope for the distortion of information. “The more live media expands, the more transparent society becomes,” he added.

He further said that editors, media owners, and journalist leaders recently expressed satisfaction after meeting the Prime Minister, stating that they are currently able to perform their duties without any government pressure.

The minister noted that some legal cases filed following political changes have created concerns, but the government has clear instructions that no journalist will be harassed or subjected to false cases without concrete evidence and specific allegations.

He added that if credible evidence of wrongdoing exists, due legal process will be followed.

Swapon expressed gratitude to the media for their responsible role during the government’s first 100 days and extended Eid-ul-Azha greetings to journalists and the people of the country.
