The identity of a man known as “Dollar,” whose name surfaced following statements made by the prime accused in the murder of child Ramisa Akter, has been revealed. However, investigators say they have found no evidence linking him to the crime and believe the allegation may be an attempt to divert the judicial process.
According to local residents and sources involved in the investigation, Dollar lives in the Pallabi area, only a few houses away from the residence where Ramisa was killed. He reportedly works as an auto-rickshaw driver and is known locally for drug addiction.
Investigators said Dollar became acquainted with the main accused, Sohel Rana, through a local rickshaw garage where Rana worked as a mechanic. Dollar was reportedly a regular visitor to the garage.
Residents described Dollar’s family as financially well-established, with their own property in the area. Despite this, family members have reportedly distanced themselves from him due to his long-term drug addiction.
Speaking to the media, Dollar’s elder brother, Selim Raihan, said the family has had no contact with him for nearly 19 years. He added that if any involvement in the murder is proven through investigation, Dollar should face the maximum legal punishment.
The controversy emerged on Monday when Sohel Rana, while appearing before the tribunal during charge-framing proceedings, claimed that Dollar was responsible for both the rape and murder of Ramisa. He further alleged that Dollar had promised him two lakh taka in exchange for bringing the child to him.
However, investigators rejected the claim. Sub-Inspector Wahiduzzaman Bhuiyan of Pallabi Police Station, who is leading the investigation, said authorities examined information related to Dollar but found no direct, circumstantial, or digital evidence connecting him to the crime. Investigators also found no indication that he was present at the crime scene, which is why his name was excluded from the charge sheet.
Ramisa Akter’s dismembered body was recovered from a house in Pallabi on May 19. Following the incident, police arrested Sohel Rana from Fatullah in Narayanganj while he was allegedly attempting to flee. He later gave a confessional statement before the court. Police have since submitted the charge sheet, and the trial process has officially begun.
