Prime Minister Tarique Rahman to Visit Malaysia on First Overseas Trip, China Tour to Follow

Prime Minister Tarique Rahman is set to embark on his first foreign visit since taking office, marking an important milestone in the new government's diplomatic engagement with the international community.
According to diplomatic sources, the Prime Minister will travel to Kuala Lumpur on June 21 for an official visit to Malaysia. Following the trip, he is expected to visit Beijing on June 23 for a series of high-level meetings and discussions.
The upcoming visits are expected to focus on strengthening bilateral relations, expanding trade and investment, enhancing labour market cooperation, and exploring broader regional partnerships.
Since assuming office in February, there has been considerable interest in diplomatic circles regarding the destination of Tarique Rahman’s first overseas visit. The tour carries added significance as it comes after the BNP-led government returned to power nearly two decades after its last tenure.
Foreign policy observers view the decision to begin international engagements with Malaysia as a strategic and balanced move. Malaysia remains one of Bangladesh’s key partners in Southeast Asia, with strong cooperation in labour migration, trade, investment, education, and people-to-people exchanges.
Diplomatic analysts believe that choosing a middle-power nation as the first destination, rather than a major global power, reflects Bangladesh’s intention to maintain a pragmatic and balanced foreign policy amid growing geopolitical competition in Asia.
Sources familiar with the visit said the Prime Minister is expected to hold meetings with senior Malaysian leaders in Kuala Lumpur, where labour market opportunities, investment cooperation, and bilateral economic ties are likely to feature prominently.
His subsequent visit to Beijing is also expected to focus on economic cooperation, infrastructure development, trade expansion, and investment partnerships between Bangladesh and China.
Observers say the two visits will not only strengthen Bangladesh’s international engagement under the new administration but also provide an early indication of the government's foreign policy priorities in the years ahead.
