The lives of three disabled brothers in Patuakhali’s Bauphal have dramatically changed after media reports highlighted their hardship, prompting an outpouring of support from compassionate people at home and abroad.
A special bank account opened for the brothers has already received Tk 1,176,281 in donations aimed at securing their future and improving their quality of life.
The three brothers — Ripon Das, Sadhu Das, and Nidhhu Das of Chandakathi village in Bauphal upazila — have lived with physical and intellectual disabilities since birth. Following the deaths of their parents, they struggled to survive under extremely difficult conditions.
Their story gained public attention after being featured in several media outlets, triggering widespread sympathy and support from people across Bangladesh and the expatriate community.
According to family member Amit Das, Bauphal Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Md. Saleh Ahmed was among the first officials to respond. He invited the brothers to his office and provided immediate financial and food assistance.
As the story continued to spread through traditional and social media, support began pouring in from individuals and organizations. Local Member of Parliament Dr. Shafiqul Islam Masud also extended personal assistance, while the Bauphal Upazila BNP provided support following directives from Prime Minister Tarique Rahman. BNP leader Samuel Ahmed Lelen personally delivered the assistance.
To ensure transparency and proper management of the donations, the local administration facilitated the opening of a joint bank account at Agrani Bank’s Bauphal branch.
UNO Saleh Ahmed said the account was activated in the presence of the three brothers. To safeguard the funds, withdrawals will require oversight and approval from both the Upazila Nirbahi Officer and the Upazila Social Services Officer.
He added that the money will be used for the brothers’ medical treatment, rehabilitation, and emergency needs. The profits or interest generated from the deposited funds will also be utilized to support their daily living expenses on a sustainable basis.
Local officials believe the initiative will provide long-term financial security for the brothers and serve as an example of how media attention and public generosity can positively transform vulnerable lives.
