Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has said that a drug-free society is essential for building a prosperous, self-reliant and healthy nation. He stated that, in line with the government's electoral commitments, strict legal measures and comprehensive social initiatives are being implemented to protect young people from the devastating effects of drugs.

In a message issued on Thursday (June 25) marking the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking 2026, the Prime Minister highlighted the government's ongoing efforts to combat drug abuse and trafficking.

He noted that both government and private rehabilitation centers are working tirelessly to help individuals recover from addiction and return to normal life. At the same time, the Department of Narcotics Control, Bangladesh Police, RAB, Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB), Coast Guard and local administration are jointly carrying out anti-drug activities across the country.

The Prime Minister emphasized that law enforcement alone cannot completely eliminate the drug problem. He stressed the need for coordinated efforts involving parents, teachers, religious leaders, students, healthcare professionals, social workers, NGOs, civil society and the media.

Rahman also pointed out that drug abuse and illicit trafficking have become global challenges, posing serious threats not only to public health but also to international security and economic stability.

Highlighting Bangladesh's demographic dividend, he said the country's large youth population presents a significant opportunity for economic growth. However, the spread of illegal drugs poses a major threat to this promising future.

He added that quality education, technology-based training, safe employment opportunities and human resource development can transform the youth into a productive force. Keeping them away from drug abuse and illicit trafficking is therefore crucial for building a developed, prosperous and self-reliant nation.

The Prime Minister concluded by wishing success to all programs organized in observance of the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking 2026.
