Bangladesh and China have signed 13 Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) aimed at strengthening bilateral cooperation across a range of sectors, including development, trade, media, and water-resource management.

The agreements were signed following bilateral talks between Bangladeshi Prime Minister Tarique Rahman and Chinese Premier Li Qiang at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing on Thursday.

Among the agreements, four MoUs focus specifically on enhancing cooperation in the media sector, reflecting the two countries’ commitment to expanding people-to-people and institutional exchanges.

Prime Minister Tarique Rahman led the Bangladesh delegation, while Premier Li Qiang headed the Chinese side during the discussions. Officials from both countries expressed optimism that the newly signed agreements would elevate Bangladesh-China relations to a new level.

Earlier, Premier Li Qiang accorded a red-carpet reception and a ceremonial guard of honour to Prime Minister Tarique Rahman at the Great Hall of the People.

The Bangladesh delegation included Foreign Minister Dr. Khalilur Rahman, Information and Broadcasting Minister Zahir Uddin Swapon, Water Resources Minister Shahid Uddin Chowdhury Anee, State Minister for Power and Energy Anindya Islam Amit, Foreign Affairs Adviser Humaiun Kobir, Economic and Planning Adviser Rashed Al Mahmud Titumir, Education Adviser Mahdi Amin, Foreign Secretary Asad Alam Siam, and other senior officials.

Cooperation on Teesta and Water Resource Management

In a separate meeting held at the Diaoyutai State Guest House, Chinese Minister of Water Resources Li Guoying met with Prime Minister Tarique Rahman, where both sides agreed to strengthen cooperation on the management of the Teesta River and other rivers in Bangladesh.

During the meeting, the prime minister highlighted Bangladesh’s ongoing river excavation programme, which aims to reduce flood risks, protect the environment, and ensure sustainable water-resource management. He sought China’s support in enhancing Bangladesh’s water-management capacity and requested technical assistance for the Teesta management project.

Responding positively, Minister Li Guoying assured Bangladesh of China’s full cooperation in water-resource development and management initiatives. He noted that Bangladesh could benefit from China’s extensive experience in the sector and invited Bangladeshi water experts and officials to receive specialized training in China.

Prime Minister Tarique Rahman arrived in Beijing on Wednesday from the northeastern Chinese city of Dalian after attending the World Economic Forum’s Summer Davos meeting.

The prime minister is currently on a four-day official visit to China, aimed at strengthening bilateral ties and expanding cooperation in key strategic sectors.
