Constitution Guarantees Equal Rights for All Faiths: Information Minister

Information and Broadcasting Minister Zahir Uddin Swapon has said that the Constitution of Bangladesh guarantees equal rights for all citizens regardless of their religion, stressing that there is no room for discrimination or division based on faith.

He made the remarks while addressing a discussion marking the Ulto Rath Yatra (Return Chariot Festival) of Lord Jagannath at the Dhakeshwari National Temple in the capital on Friday.

The minister said followers of the Sanatan (Hindu) faith enjoy the same constitutional rights as Muslims, Christians, and Buddhists. He added that those who attempt to create division in the name of religion or politics are acting against the country, religion, and humanity.

Highlighting the historical significance of the Sanatan faith, he said it represents thousands of years of heritage and tradition. He noted that spiritual leaders of all religions have sought closeness to the Creator throughout history, and true believers always respect followers of other faiths despite differences in rituals and practices.

Zahir Uddin Swapon also urged people to remain vigilant against domestic and foreign elements seeking to exploit religious sentiments for narrow political interests or to create social discord.

He emphasized that peaceful coexistence can only be achieved when people remain devoted to their own faith while showing equal respect for others, describing this as the true spirit of a secular and inclusive society.

Referring to the vision of Bangladeshi nationalism announced by Prime Minister Tarique Rahman, the minister said no discrimination based on religion, ethnicity, language, or geographical identity would be accepted.

The event was inaugurated by Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) Administrator Abdus Salam, who said Bangladesh belongs equally to people of all communities and that those attempting to undermine communal harmony do not truly believe in the country's sovereignty.

The Information Minister also recalled that people of all faiths fought together during the 1971 Liberation War, saying the country's independence was achieved through their collective sacrifices and that no citizen should ever be treated as a second-class citizen.

Basudeb Dhar, President of the Bangladesh Puja Udjapan Parishad, also addressed the event as a special guest.
