The Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) has announced a five-day programme to mark its 48th founding anniversary. BNP Acting Secretary General and Political Adviser to the Prime Minister Ruhul Kabir Rizvi announced the programme at a press conference at the party’s central office on Wednesday afternoon.
Earlier, a joint meeting of the party was held at the central office, chaired by Rizvi. Joint secretaries general, leaders of BNP’s Dhaka North and South units, and senior leaders of its affiliated and associate organisations attended the meeting.
Rizvi said BNP Chairman and Prime Minister Tarique Rahman would pay tribute to the graves of late President Ziaur Rahman and former BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia at 9:00 am on September 1.
He said Tarique Rahman would offer prayers and place floral wreaths at the graves as part of the anniversary programme.
A discussion meeting will be held on September 5 to mark the party’s founding anniversary. The BNP will also organise fish release and tree plantation programmes on suitable dates, which will be announced later.
BNP Joint Secretary General Habib-un-Nabi Khan Sohel will lead the fish release programme, while Joint Secretary General and Water Resources Minister Shahiduddin Chowdhury Anee will lead the tree plantation programme.
Rizvi said several additional programmes had been drafted for the anniversary. Those programmes will be announced later after consultation with the party chairman.
At the press conference, Rizvi also highlighted the political role of BNP founder and late President Ziaur Rahman.
He said Ziaur Rahman had inspired people from different sections of society, including students, teachers, farmers and workers, to participate in the Liberation War.
Rizvi said Ziaur Rahman assumed state responsibility on November 7, 1975, during what he described as a critical period for the country, and subsequently took initiatives to restore democratic practices.
According to Rizvi, Ziaur Rahman established multiparty democracy and founded the BNP with a focus on independence, sovereignty and democracy.
He further said Ziaur Rahman’s leadership helped move Bangladesh towards development and increased production.
