No LPG Shortage in Bangladesh, Government Warns Against Hoarding

Prime Minister’s Information Adviser Zahed Ur Rahman has said there is no shortage of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) in Bangladesh. He warned that the government would take action against anyone attempting to create public dissatisfaction by hoarding LPG for dishonest purposes.

He made the remarks at a press briefing on the progress of government activities at the Information Department’s conference room in the Secretariat on Tuesday, September 29.

The adviser said Bangladesh imported 157,760 metric tonnes of LPG in August, while imports in September had reached 118,000 metric tonnes so far. According to information presented at the briefing, the country’s LPG supply and stock situation remains satisfactory.

He said LPG importers and operators had assured the Minister of Power, Energy and Mineral Resources that there was no shortage in the domestic market. They gave the assurance at a recent meeting reviewing LPG imports, stocks, supply and market prices.

Noting that prices were rising in some areas despite sufficient stocks, the adviser said the minister had warned against hoarding LPG to create public dissatisfaction.

He added that speculative trends were emerging in global commodity markets and could also be contributing to price increases. The government was monitoring the situation and taking necessary measures, he said.

Zahed Ur Rahman also said the government had moved away from what he described as a chaotic situation, adding that violence had declined compared with the past.

He further said the introduction of a Cyber Security Act would help reduce misinformation.
