Two Senior Police Officers Dismissed from Service

The government has dismissed two senior police officers—former Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Joint Commissioner (Traffic-South) S M Mehedi Hasan and former Additional Superintendent of Police of Industrial Police-2 in Gazipur, Md Rahmat Ullah Chowdhury—from service.

The Home Ministry issued separate notifications on Tuesday (September 29) ordering their dismissal. According to the notifications, Mehedi Hasan was dismissed with effect from August 6, 2024, while Rahmat Ullah Chowdhury was dismissed with effect from February 10, 2025. The dismissal decisions were approved by the President on September 22, according to reports.

Departmental proceedings were initiated against both officers under the Government Servants (Discipline and Appeal) Rules, 2018. The notifications stated that the allegation of desertion was established against Mehedi Hasan, while allegations of misconduct and desertion were established against Rahmat Ullah Chowdhury.

According to the notification, Mehedi Hasan, who was serving as DMP Joint Commissioner (Traffic-South) and was later temporarily suspended and attached to the office of the DIG of Sylhet Range, remained absent from his workplace from August 6, 2024, without informing the authorities verbally or in writing.

Notices were subsequently sent to his permanent and current addresses as well as his email, asking him to return to duty. However, he did not report to his workplace.

A departmental case was filed against him on June 19 last year. Although he was served a show-cause notice, he did not submit a response or seek additional time.

An inquiry officer was subsequently appointed. The investigation report submitted on April 29 this year stated that the allegation of desertion against him had been established. A second show-cause notice was issued on June 4, but he again did not respond.

After reviewing the investigation report and relevant documents, the authorities took an initial decision to dismiss him. The Bangladesh Public Service Commission (PSC) was consulted and, on August 24, gave its opinion in favour of dismissal. He was subsequently dismissed with the President's approval.

According to the other notification, Rahmat Ullah Chowdhury, while serving at Industrial Police-2 in Gazipur, went to the then Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (now Bangladesh Medical University) on February 9, 2025, for medical treatment. A physician advised him to take two months' rest from February 10.

He was scheduled to return to work on April 11 after completing the recommended rest period but did not report for duty. Attempts to contact him were unsuccessful, while his office orderly, bodyguard, and driver were also reportedly unable to provide specific information about his whereabouts.

Several notices were subsequently sent to his permanent and temporary addresses, but he did not return to work. A departmental case was filed against him on July 30 last year after he failed to respond to the show-cause notice.

An investigation report submitted on March 12 this year stated that the allegations of misconduct and desertion against him had been established. A second show-cause notice was later issued, but he again did not respond.

The authorities subsequently took an initial decision to dismiss him. The PSC also gave its opinion in favour of dismissal on August 24. He was later dismissed with the approval of the President.
