Iran has strongly condemned recent threats from the United States to intensify economic pressure and sanctions against the country. Iran’s Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baghaei described such policies as “economic terrorism” and a crime against humanity.

According to a report by Tasnim News Agency, Baghaei made the remarks in a post on the social media platform X on Thursday night (April 16).

He said policies that deliberately impose suffering and hardship on innocent people are being presented with a sense of self-righteousness, which he described as deeply disturbing.

Baghaei argued that such actions amount to economic terrorism and state-sponsored extortion, adding that they could be considered crimes against humanity and, in their broader impact, comparable to genocide.

In his post, he also attached an image of a report headline from Associated Press stating that the United States is planning to further increase economic pressure on Iran.

According to the report, US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said the new economic measures would be the financial equivalent of a bombing campaign against Iran.
