World Press Freedom Day is being observed worldwide today, May 3, highlighting the importance of press freedom, responsible journalism, and freedom of expression.

This year’s theme is: “Shaping a Peaceful Future: Strengthening Press Freedom for Human Rights, Development, and Security.”

Like other countries, Bangladesh is observing the day through various programs. Journalists across the country are marking the occasion with activities aimed at ensuring professional rights and dignity.

Following a recommendation by UNESCO in 1991, the United Nations General Assembly officially proclaimed May 3 as World Press Freedom Day in 1993. Since then, the day has been observed globally.

The occasion serves to reaffirm commitments to press freedom, evaluate media independence worldwide, resist interference, and honor journalists who have sacrificed for the profession.

In Bangladesh, the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting organized a rally and discussion session. The rally started at the Officers Club and ended at the Information Building Complex.

A discussion meeting was also held at the conference room of the Department of Films and Publications at the Information Building Complex. Information and Broadcasting Minister Zahid Uddin Swapan attended as the chief guest, while State Minister Yasir Khan Chowdhury was present as a special guest.
