Andy Burnham has confirmed that he is putting the final touches to his cabinet as he prepares to become the United Kingdom’s next prime minister on Monday, following his election as leader of the Labour Party.

Speaking after his leadership victory, Burnham said discussions over key ministerial appointments were nearing completion and that the new government would be ready to begin work immediately after taking office. He is expected to unveil his full cabinet shortly after being formally appointed by King Charles III.

Burnham, the former Mayor of Greater Manchester, pledged to lead a government focused on restoring public confidence, strengthening public services, and delivering greater economic opportunities across the country. He said his administration would prioritise decentralising power away from Westminster, improving social care, and supporting regional economic growth.

Several senior Labour figures are expected to retain prominent roles in the new government, while a number of fresh appointments are anticipated as Burnham seeks to reshape the cabinet following Sir Keir Starmer’s resignation. However, Burnham declined to reveal specific names, saying the final decisions would be announced once all appointments had been confirmed.

The incoming prime minister also stressed the importance of unity within the Labour Party, promising to bring together experienced ministers and new talent to address the country's economic challenges, pressures on the National Health Service, and the rising cost of living.

Burnham's leadership marks a significant political comeback after nearly a decade serving as Mayor of Greater Manchester. Once sworn into office, he will inherit a government facing slowing economic growth, strained public finances, and growing demands for reform across healthcare, housing, and local government.

Political observers say the composition of Burnham’s first cabinet will offer an early indication of his governing style and policy priorities. Financial markets, businesses, and international partners are expected to closely watch his initial appointments and the direction of his new administration.

Burnham is scheduled to officially take office on Monday, when Sir Keir Starmer is expected to tender his resignation to the King, paving the way for the formation of the new Labour government.
