Two army camps will be established in the Rohingya camps in Cox’s Bazar to strengthen security, Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed has said. He also announced plans to establish a police academy modeled after the Sardah Police Academy in Jungle Salimpur of Chattogram’s Sitakunda, along with a new Chattogram Central Jail nearby.

The minister made the remarks on Thursday (October 8) while briefing journalists at the Secretariat after a meeting on the Rohingya crisis and the law-and-order situation in Jungle Salimpur.

Salahuddin Ahmed said measures would be taken to drive out criminals from Jungle Salimpur and establish good governance in the area. A police academy and the Chattogram Central Jail will be constructed there as part of the plan.

Regarding security in the Rohingya camps, the minister said law enforcement agencies are investigating incidents involving drug trafficking and human trafficking in the camps. To prevent further deterioration of the law-and-order situation, two army camps will be established in Rangikhali and Noakhali Para.

He added that several areas inside the Rohingya camps will be brought under CCTV surveillance to strengthen monitoring and security.

On Rohingya repatriation, the home minister said returning the refugees to their homeland is possible. He said the process could be carried out under the leadership of the United Nations with assistance from various international organizations.
