Bangladeshi newspaper Daily Naya Diganta has completed 22 years of publication and entered its 23rd year. The anniversary highlights the newspaper’s stated commitment to objective journalism, freedom of expression and democratic values.

Launched in 2004 under the slogan “Truth Every Day,” Naya Diganta has sought to bring news to readers while giving a voice to people from different walks of life. Despite facing various challenges, the newspaper says it has continued to uphold responsible journalism and exercise the constitutional right to freedom of expression.

In its anniversary editorial, the newspaper stated that it played an important role as a platform for alternative viewpoints during Sheikh Hasina’s rule. It said the newspaper faced severe financial difficulties for more than 15 years amid an adverse government environment, with the effects of that period continuing to affect its operations. Despite these challenges, the editorial maintained, the newspaper remained committed to objective news reporting.

The editorial also referred to the political changes following the student-public uprising on August 5, 2024, which ended Sheikh Hasina’s rule. Against the backdrop of Bangladesh’s subsequent democratic transition and the formation of an elected government following the 13th parliamentary election, it stressed the importance of press freedom and responsible journalism.

According to the newspaper’s editorial position, the role of the media becomes especially important when democratic institutions are weak and citizens’ rights are at risk. Reporting events accurately, speaking up for people’s rights and supporting democratic principles remain among the responsibilities Naya Diganta says it intends to uphold.

The anniversary message expressed gratitude to readers, advertisers, newspaper distributors and well-wishers who have supported the publication throughout its 22-year journey. Their support, it said, has been a source of strength in overcoming financial and other challenges.

Naya Diganta has reaffirmed its intention to remain committed to objective journalism, democracy and people’s rights in the years ahead. On the occasion of its anniversary, the newspaper extended its greetings and congratulations to its readers, partners and well-wishers.
