Messi Thanks Argentina Fans but Says World Cup Final ‘Wound Will Take Time to Heal

 Argentina captain Lionel Messi has thanked supporters for standing behind the national team during the 2026 FIFA World Cup, while admitting that the pain of losing the final to Spain will take time to overcome.

Argentina’s hopes of winning a second consecutive World Cup ended with a 1–0 extra-time defeat by Spain at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey on Sunday. Substitute Ferran Torres scored the decisive goal in the 106th minute, denying the defending champions another historic triumph.

In an emotional social-media message, Messi said the defeat had caused “immense” pain and described it as a wound that would not heal quickly. However, the 39-year-old also urged supporters to remember the positive moments from Argentina’s campaign, including the team’s dramatic victories and its achievement in reaching consecutive World Cup finals.

Messi thanked Argentina’s fans for their unwavering support throughout the tournament, saying the backing of the country, together with the squad’s effort and unity, had once again placed Argentina among the world’s leading football nations.

The captain also congratulated Spain on winning the title, displaying sportsmanship following a deeply disappointing night for the South American champions. Spain’s victory secured the country’s second World Cup crown and its first since 2010.

Although Argentina struggled to create clear opportunities in the final, their overall campaign reflected the resilience that has defined Lionel Scaloni’s team in recent years.

Argentina defeated England 2–1 in the semi-final after scoring twice late in the match, while earlier knockout victories over Egypt and Switzerland also demonstrated their ability to recover under pressure.

Messi said it was difficult to fully appreciate the team’s achievement immediately after the defeat, but emphasised that reaching two successive World Cup finals remained a significant accomplishment.

Argentina won the 2022 World Cup in Qatar by defeating France on penalties, ending a 36-year wait for the trophy. Their appearance in the 2026 final confirmed the sustained success of the generation led by Messi and Scaloni, even though they were unable to retain the title.
