A young man who was critically injured in a stabbing attack by muggers in Narayanganj's Bandar area has died while undergoing treatment, triggering protests by local residents who carried his body to the police station and demanded justice.

Following allegations of negligence and bribery in the handling of the case, a Sub-Inspector (SI) of Bandar Model Police Station has been withdrawn from duty.

The deceased, Md. Zobayer, 18, was a resident of Rajapur in Pabna Sadar and had been living in Enayetnagar, Bandar, where he worked at a local business establishment.

According to local sources, the incident occurred on June 3 at around 9:10 pm when Zobayer was returning home from work. Three alleged muggers intercepted him near the northern side of the Bhanga Bridge area in Enayetnagar. When he resisted, the attackers repeatedly stabbed him and fled with his mobile phone.

Locals rescued him in critical condition and took him first to Narayanganj's 300-bed Hospital before he was transferred to Dhaka Medical College Hospital. After battling for life for several days, he died at around 5:30 am on Sunday.

News of his death sparked anger among residents. Later in the evening, hundreds of people gathered with his body in front of Bandar Model Police Station, demanding the immediate arrest and punishment of those responsible.

Family members and residents alleged that police had initially refused to register a case. A local resident claimed that SI Masud demanded Tk 10,000 to record the complaint and that the case was not accepted when the money was not paid.

Responding to the allegations, Officer-in-Charge Golam Mukhtar Ashraf Uddin said he had no information indicating that the victim's family had been turned away while attempting to file a case. However, he confirmed that the accused SI had been withdrawn following the complaints.

The OC also said that one suspect has already been arrested in connection with the incident. Once a formal case is filed, the suspect will be shown arrested in that case as well. Police operations are continuing to identify and apprehend other individuals involved in the crime.
