Holy Eid-ul-Azha was celebrated across Bangladesh on Thursday with religious solemnity, sacrifice and festivity, as millions of Muslims gathered at Eidgahs and mosques to offer Eid prayers.

The main Eid congregation in the capital was held at the National Eidgah Ground at 7:30 am. President Mohammad Shahabuddin, Prime Minister Tarique Rahman, cabinet members, judges, diplomats and people from different walks of life joined the prayers.

Special prayers were offered after the congregation, seeking peace, prosperity and well-being for the nation and the Muslim Ummah. The Eid prayer was led by Mufti Mohammad Abdul Malek, khatib of Baitul Mukarram National Mosque.

Several Eid congregations were also held at Baitul Mukarram National Mosque throughout the morning, while separate Jamaats took place at the National Parliament complex, Dhaka University and various other locations across the capital.

At the south plaza of the Bangladesh Parliament, Deputy Speaker Barrister Kaiser Kamal and parliament officials joined worshippers in Eid prayers and special munajat.

Following the prayers, people across the city became busy with Qurbani activities. Families, neighbours and volunteers worked together in slaughtering sacrificial animals and distributing meat among relatives and underprivileged people.

Special Eid programmes are being aired by Bangladesh Television, Bangladesh Betar and private television channels. Improved meals were also served at hospitals, orphanages, prisons and child care centres as part of the Eid celebrations.

Outside the capital, Eid was observed with equal enthusiasm. The 199th Eid congregation was held at the historic Sholakia Eidgah in Kishoreganj, while large congregations also took place at Jamiatul Falah Mosque in Chattogram and the Gor-e-Shahid ground in Dinajpur.
