Information and Broadcasting Minister Zahir Uddin Swapan has said that the natural gas reserves in Bhola offer a significant opportunity to establish planned industrial zones across southern Bangladesh, creating jobs and accelerating regional economic development.

Speaking as the chief guest at the Eid Reunion and Distinguished Citizens Award 2026, organized by the Barishal District Association in Dhaka on Friday night, the minister highlighted the strategic importance of energy resources in attracting investment.

He noted that investors primarily look for two factors before making large-scale investments: political stability and energy security. With substantial gas resources available in the southern region, Bangladesh has a unique opportunity to transform the area into a major industrial and economic hub.

According to the minister, developing industries around Bhola’s gas reserves could significantly contribute to national production, employment generation, and long-term economic growth. He also urged civic and social organizations to actively advocate for development initiatives and policy support for the region.

Addressing infrastructure challenges, Swapan stressed the need to extend the modern highway network from Padma Bridge and Bhanga to Kuakata, warning that growing traffic volumes could increase road safety risks if connectivity is not improved.

The minister also described Payra Seaport as a strategic national asset, emphasizing the importance of fully utilizing the port to support Bangladesh’s expanding trade and logistics needs alongside the country’s existing ports.

On tourism, he said that with proper policy support and promotion, Kuakata has the potential to become a major international tourist destination capable of generating substantial foreign exchange earnings over the next several years.

The event was attended by prominent political leaders, policymakers, business figures, and members of the Barishal community. Seven distinguished individuals were honored for their contributions to education, social welfare, industry, and banking in southern Bangladesh.
