State Minister for Information and Broadcasting Yasser Khan Choudhury has reaffirmed the government's commitment to ensuring media freedom, saying that Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has directed that the press remain independent and operate without interference.

Speaking as the chief guest at the inauguration of the new office of the Chattogram Metropolitan Union of Journalists (CMUJ) on Friday, the minister said a free and responsible media plays a vital role in a democratic society.

“Media outlets will remain independent and continue their work freely. At the same time, we urge journalists to maintain objectivity and accuracy in reporting. Misinformation can undermine public confidence in both the media and state institutions,” he said.

The state minister expressed concern over the growing misuse of artificial intelligence (AI) to spread false information, manipulated images, and misleading videos.

He noted that the issue has become a global concern and was discussed with foreign diplomats, who emphasized the need for training media professionals and content creators on the responsible use of AI technologies.

Yasser Khan Choudhury said the government, through the Press Institute Bangladesh (PIB), has expanded training programs for journalists across districts and upazilas to enhance professional standards and digital literacy.

He added that efforts are also underway to address journalists’ welfare, including ensuring timely payment of salaries and improving professional security.

The minister praised journalists for their contribution to democratic movements, public awareness, and accountability in Bangladesh.

He stated that the current government has not imposed restrictions on news reporting and remains committed to strengthening press freedom and professional journalism.

Land and Chattogram Hill Tracts Affairs State Minister **Barrister Mir Mohammad Helal Uddin**, who inaugurated the office, said the government welcomes constructive criticism as an essential part of democratic governance.

“Constructive criticism helps identify shortcomings and improve public service delivery. Responsible journalism can play a crucial role in highlighting local issues and finding solutions,” he said.

The event was attended by leaders of journalists’ organizations, media executives, and public representatives, including Bangladesh Federal Union of Journalists President Obaidur Rahman Shaheen and Chattogram Press Club President Zahidul Karim Kochi.
