Information and Broadcasting Minister Zahir Uddin Swapan has emphasized the role of cinema as a powerful tool for raising public awareness about climate change and environmental protection.
Speaking at the closing session of the “Global Trend and Climate Change Film Festival (GTCF) 2026” held at the National Library Auditorium in Agargaon on World Environment Day, the minister said films can go beyond entertainment and serve as an effective medium for social transformation.
He noted that the government gives priority to films carrying strong social messages through its grant programs and assured that projects focusing on environmental and climate issues would receive serious consideration from the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting.
According to the minister, climate-related documentaries, short films, and creative content should be promoted not only on digital platforms but also through wider distribution channels to maximize public engagement and awareness.
Zahir Uddin Swapan praised the organizers for selecting climate change and environmental sustainability as the central theme of the festival and encouraged them to transform the event into an annual initiative with broader participation and impact.
He also urged young filmmakers to continue producing meaningful content despite resource limitations, emphasizing that even small-scale creative efforts can generate significant global influence.
The day-long international festival featured documentaries and short films from different countries focusing on climate challenges, environmental conservation, and sustainable development. Climate experts, researchers, filmmakers, representatives of development organizations, and young leaders attended the event.
Participants highlighted the importance of storytelling, creative dialogue, and visual media in educating communities and inspiring collective action to tackle climate change and build a more sustainable future.
